During my tenure as a registrar at the Zimbabwe Media Commission, I was entrusted with a critical role in shaping Zimbabwe’s media landscape by overseeing the registration process for new media houses. This responsibility allowed me to work closely with emerging media organizations and support the growth of a diverse, informed society.
Thabang Farai Manhika, Communications Specialist
Every application submitted by a prospective media house underwent a rigorous reviewing process. My duties began with the receipt of each applicant’s business plan, a foundational document containing essential details about their operational strategy. I conducted a thorough review of these plans, examining the applicant’s market research to gauge their understanding of their intended audience and competitive landscape. I evaluated their in-house code of conduct and ethics, in-house style guide, and financial projections, ensuring alignment with industry standards and the Commission’s values. Each recommendation I made required careful consideration to uphold the Commission's commitment to media integrity and public trust.
Once an applicant had met all the necessary criteria, I would make a formal recommendation to my supervisor for their registration. From there, the final approval rested with the board of commissioners. Only after their review would the applicant be awarded an official operating license, signaling their readiness to contribute to Zimbabwe's media ecosystem.

One of the principles I held close was the importance of media plurality. By supporting a diverse array of media houses, we enhanced public access to varied perspectives, fostering a well-informed society. During my time at the Commission, I facilitated the registration of over 84 media organizations, many of which have gone on to make a significant impact nationwide. This achievement stands as a testament to my dedication to upholding high standards in the media industry and supporting the vital role of information access in society.
